In partnership with Vancouver Film Studios and Pacific Backlot Services, Blackcomb Aviation takes the lead in searchlight equipment for use in aerial shoots with the SX-16 Nightsun Searchlight. The benchmark in high intensity airborne light sources, the Nightsun is also used in Law Enforcement, Search & Rescue, Emergency Medical, Military, Border Patrol, Fire Fighting and News Gathering. Certified for use on Blackcomb’s ASTAR helicopters (TWINSTAR certification in 2010), the complete system includes the searchlight, gimbal, junction box, control box, and installation cable kit. For further information, contact Steve Wright, Aerial Film Coordinator at swright@blackcombaviation.com.
Used by government agencies, law enforcement & the military, TSOP assists SWAT teams and rescue crews with rooftop evacuations, search and rescue, dive team deployment and more. On film shoots, this platform can also be used to attach simulated guns, rockets, and missiles. Certified for use on Blackcomb Aviation’s ASTAR and TWINSTAR helicopters, each platform is designed with folding footrest & attachment points for securing personnel wearing safety gear. For further information, contact Steve Wright, Aerial Film Coordinator at swright@blackcombaviation.com.
Blackcomb’s pilots are internationally known for their expertise in coordinating and conducting aerial shoots in challenging terrains. From location scouts to stunt work, Blackcomb’s film pilots have thousands of flight hours and extensive credits on award-winning feature films and television series, large scale sporting events, documentaries and commercials. Additionally, Blackcomb works with Tourism British Columbia and others in the acquisition of B roll footage for trailers and other promotional ventures. Blackcomb Aviation also has exclusive custody and control of the City of Vancouver’s only certified private helipad which is located at Vancouver Film Studios, Blackcomb’s sister company and the largest production facility in Western Canada.
Regional expertise is the key to finding the right locations and Blackcomb’s film pilots and mountain guides are intimately familiar with British Columbia’s back lot. In order to minimize unproductive location scouting, Blackcomb’s aerial coordinator works closely with production to balance the demands of the script with the realities of budget and geography.
Blackcomb’s helicopters are suitable for use as both picture ships and camera ships. Housed in heated, high security hangar facilities at Vancouver’s International Airport, Squamish, Delta, Victoria, Whistler, and the Bridge River Valley base, Blackcomb aircraft are available during all daylight hours, 365 days a year. A duty pilot is on call at all times during daylight hours with back-up aircraft available for additional requirements. Blackcomb selects the aircraft and crew best suited to each film project. Detailed planning, together with strict control of aircraft use, facilitates economic efficiencies and on-budget management for film shoots, large or small.
Blackcomb’s provides charter jet travel for production executives, directors, actors, and film personnel who require flexible departure times for flights between Vancouver and Los Angeles. Additional flight services to other destinations can be arranged through Blackcomb’s Executive Travel division.
Detailed safety briefings are conducted with production, flight crews and Blackcomb’s mountain guides (where applicable) prior to the commencement of any work involving our aircraft to ensure safe use of the aircraft. Blackcomb highly recommends the use of safety coordinators on all film shoots to further ensure a well-planned operation.
Special low flying permits are available.
Blackcomb’s film pilots and aircraft maintenance engineers are experienced in the use of Wescam, Spacecam, Tyler, and Stab-C mounts:
